I am focused on the everyday excitements of living in a major city, Beijing the epicentre of the Worlds new POP capital.
Choosing subjects which stand out as definitions of Beijing to foreign eyes, and instilling them with romantic, sentimental and humorous overtones, which will hopefully engage local Chinese in new ways with their surroundings.
Details and features which are so different to my own culture are noticed, observed and processed through a POP art/ Patrick Caulfield lens, absorbing banalities, rendering them worthy, memorable, cherish-able even, as emblems of our modern life.
Pop removes the material from its context and isolates the object, or combines it with other objects, for contemplation. These images have proved banal and meaningless at first to some local observers, but that is perhaps due to over exposure with the subjects, and a strong pre-defined pre-programmed contextual understanding, I challenge this as a fan of irony but not as a cynic.
