PUBLIC View 2 of 3 - IT HAPPENED, DESPITE THE RAIN!!

Friday, April 24th, 2009

Firstly, THANK YOU to all who braved the rain and came by!  it was good to hang out in the fresh spring air.

We were told at one point the map wasn’t great - they actually hadn’t even seen it but made it anyway…

Picture: thanks to Chip Rountree!

mzdnflowersoak-001Re:Building a Nation - observations in an urban environment
Photography by Oak Taylor-Smith

Last year saw the Chinese capital city at it’s finest, days were blue and sunny, and flowers were in bloom everywhere.  For months around the great event, picket fenced islands of potted lushness and colour were recruited to the pavements around our neighbourhood, I’m guessing not to feed the butterflies…

Re:Building of a Nation

Landing in Beijing in 2005 and with a background in architectural photography, I wanted, to document the reconstruction of a city I live in and mostly enjoy. However, barren wastelands of demolished buildings and hollow concrete giants were not in the end as interesting as the textures and morphing canvas that surrounded the construction sites and pervade a city in flux.

In a series of posts to ThisCityArt.org I plan to show some of the subjects and resulting images, the first titled ‘The Art of Façade’
